  This sculpture by Earl W. Bascom, depicts a professional rodeo contestant riding a rearing bareback horse. Leaning back with one hand in the rigging and the other in the air, the rodeo cowboy is spurring in classic style, high and wide and in perfect rhythm with the thrashing bronc. The horse is branded with the C Cross ranch brand and was one of the many famous Canadian rodeo horses owned by the millionaire rancher and rodeo producer Ray Knight. Ray Knight is known as the "father of Canadian rodeo."
  
  The sculptor, Earl Bascom, who was a professional bareback rider rodeoing for some 25 years, had worked on Ray Knight's ranch and rode many of Knight's famous bucking horses at various rodeos. Earl Bascom is best known in rodeo history for designing and making rodeo's first one-hand bareback rigging back in 1924, making him known as the "Father of Modern-day Rodeo Bareback Riding." Bascom's rigging revolutionized the rodeo bareback riding event and is used at rodeo's world-wide even today. For his rodeo achievements, Bascom has been honored in several Halls of Fame in the United States and Canada including the Cowboy Memorial Museum in California.
